Everest (IMAX)
During the month of May 1996, director
David Breashears, his team of climbers, Sherpa guides and their IMAX mountain
equipment struggled among other climbing parties to reach the summit of Mount
Everest. Eight people from other teams died during that ascent, but the IMAX
team, after helping to coordinate rescue efforts, made it to the top and brought
home this astonishing footage. [WATCH THE MOVIE]
Everest is a 70mm
IMAX
documentary film about the struggles one undergoes in climbing
Mount
Everest, the highest peak on Earth. The film includes a vivid description of
the training required in order to climb, and the challenges encountered such as
avalanches
and lack of oxygen.
Production
The 40-minute film is narrated by
Liam
Neeson and shot entirely in IMAX format.
Hollywood Reporter called it "one of the best IMAX films ever." This film
had been in production at Everest when the fatal events of
Jon
Krakauer's book
Into
Thin Air took place, in which a group of
mountain climbers were trapped by a blizzard near the summit. This film
contains footage of these people, as IMAX crewmembers interrupt filming to aid
the stricken climbers.
Box Office
Everest grossed $87 million during its US theatrical run, which is the
second highest grossing amount ever for an IMAX documentary.

Narrator: Just above the
high camp, a climber named Beck Weathers had been out in the snow for over
22 hours. He had been left for dead by other climbers. Then, nearly blind,
his hands literally frozen solid, Beck stood up, left his pack... and
desperately tried to walk.
Weathers: All I knew was, that as long as my legs would run, and I
could stand up... I was gonna move toward that camp. And if I fell down, I
was gonna get up. And if I fell down again, I was gonna keep moving, until I
hit that camp... or I walked off the face of that mountain. |
